Though a NASCAR Winston Cup Series victory this season has eluded Mike
Skinner, driver of the Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse Racing Chevrolet,
his third year of competition in stock car racing's highest series has
been
his best ever. Through 30 races, the 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the
Year has earned two poles (doubling his career total), five top-five
finishes (he began the season with four), and 12 top-10 finishes (doubling
his career total). He is 10th in the championship point standings, 12
positions higher than after the same number of races last season, and is
one of only six drivers to finish all but one race this year."If we can just stay steady, we can go on the stage at the Waldorf-Astoria at the NASCAR Winston Cup banquet," said Skinner. "That's pretty big for my career. I want to win a race more than anybody but the big picture is getting on that stage."
