Indianapolis, IN: In the true spirit of cooperation and
family, Kelley
Racing driver Scott Sharp has volunteered to take the wheel of the #99
Treadway Racing G-Force this weekend during a private Firestone tire
test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
For the test this weekend, Sharp will substitute for the injured Sam Schmidt, who is currently recovering in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Schmidt suffered fractures of both feet when both he and Sharp collided in a racing incident during the Mall.com 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway, and Schmidt made contact with the outside restraining wall.
"I am still really regretful for what happened," stated the 31 year-old C armel, Indiana resident. "I feel really bad for Sam and I am happy that I am able to help the Treadway team."
Treadway Racing team members are pleased to see such a strong sense of family displayed by the IRL and all of its participants. Well-wishers and volunteers have been plenty, and help has been easy to come by.
"The outpouring of support has just been tremendous," said Scott Cronk, vice president. "All of consideration and kindness from the teams has made a strong impact, and it's nice to know that along with good competition, the IRL demonstrates cooperation and promotes a family oriented atmosphere. We couldn't ask for more generosity toward Sam and the team and we would like to thank Scott Sharp for volunteering his time to help us with our motor and tire development this weekend. He is a truly talented driver and we are pleased to have the opportunity to work with him."
Both the Treadway and Kelley Racing teams will run the 2000 IRL season with Comptech engines and Firestone tires.
Schmidt will be undergoing a second surgery for his left foot today. His recovery period, and his release date have not yet been determined.
