Ft. Worth, Texas--Effective today, David Starr has chosen to step down as driver of the No. 73 Sonntag Racing Chevrolet.

"This is a very difficult decision to announce," Starr read from a statement, "But due to events that took place during last weeks race at Texas I feel that I have no choice other than to resign from the team.

"I am saddened to take this course of action, yet I feel it is the best option for my reputation and career. That said, I appreciate the opportunity that Joey Sonntag has given me this season and I am grateful for the experience and faith he showed in me. I wish this team the best of success for the future."

Though his future is unclear, several teams that have driver vacancies for next season are said to be considering Starr.

"I have nothing on the table right now. My first priority is to find a seat for the California race, and then Ill look towards making a move for the 2000 season. Ive had some promising talks with several teams but there have been no firm offers yet. I would like to stay in the Truck Series," Starr said, but added a move to the Busch Grand National cars may not be out of the question.

Despite missing the first event of the season Starr currently stands 22nd in the overall points standings and third in the USG SHEETROCK Brand Rookie-of-the-Year standings. He also races a limited Winston West schedule in the #35 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. For more information visit his web site at http://www.www.davidstarr.com.
