Ryan Newman of South Bend, Ind. will try to remain undefeated in
USAC MCI
WorldCom Midget Car competition at the Winchester (Ind.) Speedway this
Sunday in the "Sammy Sessions Memorial" doubleheader at the 1/2-mile paved
oval.
Newman has won both previous Midget Car events there this year and is the only driver to win in both the Midget Cars and Sprint Cars there in 1999. He also currently ranks second in the National Midget Car standings behind point leader Jason Leffler.
Sunday's events also include the USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Cars and activity gets under way with practice at 11 a.m. Qualifying begins at 1 p.m. and racing starts at 2. Each series has a 33-lap feature and the event concludes the midwestern calendar for the MCI WorldCom Midget Cars before their 1999 finales in California.
Leffler, who won Saturday night's 30-lap Western MCI WorldCom Midget Car race at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway, has a virtual lock on the 1999 National point race, which would make him the first driver to claim three consecutive championships since Jimmy Davies did it in 1960-62.
MCI WORLDCOM USAC NATIONAL MIDGET CAR STANDINGS
1. Jason Leffler 481
2. Ryan Newman 337
3. Jerry Coons, Jr. 332
4. Tracy Hines 236
5. Jay Drake 235
