IRL: Schmidt Transferred to Indianapolis Hospital

Indianapolis, IN: Sam Schmidt was transferred early this morning from Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas to Indianapolis, Indiana for further evaluation by IRL medical staff. He is currently been admitted to Methodist Hospital in downtown Indianapolis, and a second surgery for his left foot is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, October 21st.

After a collision at the Texas Motor Speedway during the Mall.com 500, Schmidt was transferred from the racetrack by helicopter to Parkland for immediate treatment. The 34 year-old father of two underwent surgery at approximately 12:00 a.m. to fix two open fractures on his right foot, and to relieve swelling and pressure to the multiple fractures in his left.

The procedure was flawless, but doctors were forced to remove the upper portion of Schmidt's right big toe above the joint, and the second surgery is required to further correct the fractures in his left foot. Overall prognosis is good, but the recovery period has not been determined as of yet.
