TRACKS: Doyle Boatwright Wins LM Stock Skirmish at Lake City

13 October 1999

LAKE CITY, Fla. - He only led only one lap, but Doyle Boatwright won Saturday night's 25-lap rough and tumble late model stock feature at Columbia Motorsports Park.

It took a trio of false starts before the dozen car field finally settled down to race as John Crawford took the point on the fast half-mile oval. Several battles kept the fans interested while up front Eddie Gainey was pressuring Crawford for the lead. In a late race skirmish Crawford, anticipating a yellow flag that didn't happen, checked up and was drilled by Eddie Gainey to close up the field again. As they came to the checkers Boatwright, who spun early, zipped into the lead ahead of Crawford and notched second win of the season. Eric Williams beat Gainey to the line for third with Greg Boyle rounding out the top five runners.

The companion 20-lap Florida modified main was much less dramatic as point leader J.F. McClellan started from the pole and when the green flag few he was never headed, running to his eighth win this season. Mike Johnson gave chase but settled for second in front of Roger Webb, Crawford and visitor Ron Herian.

Randall Jackson paced the first half of the 20-lap street stock finale but it was Trick Thomas in front at lap 11 and he crossed the stripe ahead of Charles Seroki, Shane Taylor, Jeff Prescott and Don Davis. Thomas' mount was protested and found to be legal.

The pure stocks had their biggest event of the year, a 35-lap main, and it looked as if Wayne Metts was headed for the win as he led from lap 7 to lap 27 when a sticking throttle slowed his progress. Jerry Fortner took command and took the checkers in front of William Jerkins. Post-race inspection found

problems with Forter's engine and Jerkins collected his second win of the year in front of Anthony Crain, Metts, Billy Register and John Roling.

The regular season concludes on October 30
