KAEDING SEEKS 7TH WESTERN SPRINT WIN AT MADERA SUNDAY
Marc DeBeaumont of Clayton, Calif. extended his MCI WorldCom USAC Western Midget Car point lead Saturday night, winning the 30-lap feature at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif. He leads Shane Scully by 46 points going into this Sunday night's Midget Car/Sprint Car "doubleheader" at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway.
Saturday night's races at Hanford were marred by a pair of accidents which sent drivers to Valley Medical Center in Fresno, Calif. J.W. Mitchell of Irvine, Calif. suffered a closed head injury when he flipped during the first heat race and he remains in critical condition in a coma. Alex Harris of Simi Valley, Calif., the night's fastest qualifier, was x-rayed for a possible neck injury after flipping during the feature but he was expected to be released after x-rays proved negative.
DeBeaumont passed Danny Ebberts on the white-flag lap and led the final two laps to notch his third victory of the 1999 campaign in his J & R Motorsports Gaerte. Scully finished second ahead of Bobby Boone, Ebberts and Larry Brown. Boone led the first seven laps, then Jay Drake took over for the next 17 laps and appeared headed for victory until dropping a valve on lap 25, relinquishing the lead to Ebberts.
Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. will seek his seventh victory in the USAC Western Sprint Car Series in this Sunday night's "doubleheader" at Madera's 1/3-mile paved oval. A 30-lap Midget Car and 30-lap Sprint Car feature are on tap.
