Legendary Southern Rock Band Lynyrd Skynyrd Makes $7,500 Donation
HARRISBURG, N.C. -- NASCAR Winston Cup drivers Rusty Wallace and Kenny Schrader will be at Lowe's Motor Speedway at Charlotte on Wednesday to kickoff Hayride 500 III, a NASCAR-led caravan of tractor trailers carrying relief items to aid people left homeless or stranded in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd.
On Wednesday at 8:30 a.m., NASCAR rigs from Hendrick Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, Sabco Racing, MB2 Motorsports and Mattei Motorsports will lead the relief convoy from Lowe's Motor Speedway to the Rocky Mount, N.C., relief site. Fans are welcome and last-minute donations will be accepted.
Wallace and Schrader aren't the only big names lending support to the relief effort. Legendary southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd donated $7,500 to the cause, challenging other bands to match or beat the amount.
"Skynyrd's been through a lot of tragedy, and we've seen the damage done during this time of disaster," said the band's lead singer Johnny Van Zant, in Charlotte for a concert last Friday. "We just wanted to give something to help these people out."
Thirteen years ago, Hayride 500 I & II brought hay and other resources to farmers in North Carolina and Ohio, helping them through crippling droughts. For more information, call (704) 455-3500.
