HARRISBURG, N.C. -- Thirteen years ago, farmers in
drought-stricken North Carolina and Ohio received much-needed relief from
members of the NASCAR racing family through Hayride 500 I and II. Now,
flood victims in eastern North Carolina will get the same help through
Hayride 500 III.Members of the NASCAR community and race fans throughout North Carolina will provide aid to people left homeless or stranded in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd.
"The situation is only getting worse for these people," said Tom Cotter, CEO of Cotter Group, the motor sports marketing and public relations firm organizing the relief effort. "These people are not on the other side of the world, they are in our own back yards and they are fighting for their lives. Our goal is to not only bring aid to these people but provide exposure about their situation so that people throughout the country will know how to help."
The most urgent needs are water, non-perishable foods, undergarments, clothing and other basic life necessities such as toothbrushes and other toiletry items. Washcloths, towels, soap and household cleaning products are also needed. Volunteers are needed to man the collection centers and accept donations.
Additional information and locations of collection centers will be provided as soon as it is available.
