Tracks: Final race of the season at Bloomington Speedway Friday

15 September 1999

BLOOMINGTON, IN - The final event of the 1999 racing season will take place this Friday night at Bloomington Speedway. Closing the century in a big way, the 4th Annual Street Stock and UMP Modified Nationals will disburse the biggest payday of the season for two of Bloomington's regular racing divisions. The $15,000 purse includes $1,200 to the winners of each main event. This payoff is likely to attract heavy hitters to challenge Bloomington's coterie of capable regulars in both divisions, and lend to a night of spectacular competition.

The evening's program will include the presentation of awards honoring the best drivers and teams in the O'Neal Wood Products UMP Modified Division and the Tire & Wheel Center Street Stock division for the 1999 season. Heading recipients from the modified division will be Bloomington's Ray Humphrey, who will be crowned as the new division champion. Mitchell's Lee Hobbs, champion in the street stock division, leads the street stock contingent. Other honors being presented include the "Steve Kinser Most Improved Driver" and "Jeff Gordon Rookie of the Year" awards for both divisions.

Of special interest to many fans will be a display by Bloomington High School South's championship Solar Bike Team. After finishing second in both the national and world BikeRayce championships in their first year of existence, the Solar Bikers finished second in the High School Men's Division A, first in the High School Girls Division A, and first overall in the national race. Representing the United States in Japan, the Bloomington team finished first in the high school men, and second in the high school women. In 1999, Bloomington's solar bike team repeated their national and world championships, going undefeated. More information is available on the world wide web, at http://www.bloomington.in.us/~bicycle/solar.html, or even better, meet team members and see the solar bikes at Bloomington Speedway on Friday.

General admission is $10 for adults, gates open at 5:30. Youths 12 and under are free with an adult. The pit gate opens at 4:30 and pit admission is $25. Hot laps begin at 6:30 with racing at approximately 7:45.
