USAC: Scully First at Tucson in 109th Western Midget Start
14 September 1999
KAEDING PREPS FOR MADERA AFTER 30-LAP TUCSON TRIUMPHIt took Shane Scully 109 starts to find victory lane but Saturday night's 20-lap feature victory at Tucson (Ariz.) Raceway Park solidified his hold on second in the MCI WorldCom USAC Western Midget Car standings.
Scully, who has had several runner-up and third-place finishes during his five-year Midget Car career, passed defending series champion Rick Hendrix on the sixth lap and led the rest of the way in his Your Life Vitamins VanDyne to beat Hendrix, Wally Pankratz, Chuck Gurney, Jr. and Bill Sipe. He trails series point leader Marc DeBeaumont, who did not compete at Tucson, by only 43 points going into the October 2 race at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif.
Western Sprint Car point leader Bud Kaeding took another step toward his first USAC championship by winning Saturday night's 40-lap Sprint car feature at Tucson, his fifth win of the season. He was trailed by Todd Ellison, Rick Williams, Davey Hamilton and Bobby McMahan. Williams led the first five laps and Curtis Brown led the next 25 before Kaeding, the night's fastest qualifier, went to the front for the final 10 laps in his BK Motorsports Special.
The Western Sprint Cars head for Madera Speedway for this Saturday night's events, including at 30-lap feature on the 1/3-mile pavement.
