NASCAR WCUP: Richmond Post Race Notes and Quotes, Jeff Burton
12 September 1999
99 - Jeff Burton - Exide Batteries Taurus: (finished 13th)"We had something happen there at the end. We had the car where it was real good. I couldn't run with the 20, but I got where I could run with the 18 and most everybody else."
IT LOOKED LIKE YOU HAD A PRETTY GOOD CAR THERE IN THE BEGINNING AND THE MIDDLE.
"We struggled in the beginning, but then we made some changes and the car was real good. I couldn't run with the 20. Don't get me wrong. I wasn't that good. But I was actually out-running the 18, and I could keep up with the 24. We put a quarter round in the right rear, and it's to the cords right now for whatever reason. I don't know if the track loosened up or if we had something go wrong. It got so bad there at the end where I just had to stop. It was pretty disappointing because we lost a lot of spots. The last five laps we lost eight spots. It's discouraging. When we pulled the spring rubber out, it took off. Again, it wasn't as good as the 20, and it wasn't as good as the 24, but I actually started to outrun the six. On a long run also. But whatever happened on the end there, we might have had a shock go bad or something you don't ever know. Something real strange happened. I ran real hard with Stewart there for about ten laps, and I said there's no way we can ever keep up with him. I backed up to try to just conserve tires, but it wasn't 30 laps later it started to get really on the right rear, and from then on we were junk."
