Honda Grand Prix of Monterey, Featuring the Shell 300
Round 17 of 20 on the 1999 CART FedEx Championship Series

Robby Gordon and the #22 Johns Manville/Panasonic/Menards Toyota-powered Eagle saw a premature end to their day when they ventured off course and into the Turn Six gravel trap on the 58th lap of todays 83-lap Shell 300. Gordon, who started 18th, was running 13th when he made his second pit stop of the day for tires and fuel on Lap 52. He was spun off course shortly after leaving the pits, but resumed. During an ensuing caution period, he spun off course again while trying to warm his tires.

QUOTES

ROBBY GORDON " --(On the first spin, Max) Papis hit me from behind going into the Corkscrew. I was giving him room to get by and when he was cutting across to the right (for the next turn), he hit my left rear, grabbed me, and turned me around. Its unfortunate. The second time, I simply spun on cold tires. What are you going to say? They have a new rule where if you stall in the gravel trap, they wont pull you out (to resume the race). We were running well before the first round of pit stops, holding our position pretty well. It was tough to pass, but we were able to take advantage of what few opportunities we had. We were about to work our way into the points when we pitted the second time, but it wasnt meant to be. Well get em next time."
