NASCAR WCUP: Ken Schrader returns to site of best 1999 finish

Ken Schrader and the Oakwood Homes team scored their best finish of 1999 in the NASCAR Busch Series race at Richmond in May. They started the event 16th and ran in the top-10 all day, finishing sixth.

"We're looking forward to going back to Richmond," said Chris Carrier, crew chief of the Oakwood Homes Chevrolet. "We had a good finish there in the Spring and we can take those notes and the input Schrader was able to give us to get the car set-up right."

"Richmond is a great race for the fans," said Schrader. "The facility is really nice, the track is really fast and there is lots of racing. The track provides lots of room to pass and I really like competing there. It's a great show."

LABOR DAY HOLIDAY EVENTS

Schrader spent his holiday racing in the L.A. Street Race and a Winston West race at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Utah. He dominated at Utah until a tire went down and he finished ninth.

CARRIER HAS RIR SUCCESS

Chris Carrier was crew chief for Harry Gant during his string of four consecutive wins in the Busch Series at RIR from 1990-1992.

"I love Richmond," said Carrier. "It is a tough track. You can be really good or really bad. Everything has to be hooked up. You need a good engine for the long straightaways, a good bottom end tork and brakes, because of the slow corners, and a great chassis. Usually the car with the best chassis wins the race. Gateway is a good comparison because of the long straightaways, then a driver has to slow down quickly for the corners."

PARTS OF TALLADEGA CAR SALVAGED FOR RICHMOND

Schrader was involved in a horrific fiery crash in the Busch Series race earlier this year at Talladega. They salvaged the interior roll cage, two side rails, the floor pan and front tire wall. Virtually everything else is brand new. The car is now a short track car and is the car Andy Petree Racing plans on utilizing in the Busch Series race at Richmond.

"We have new body parts, brakes, snouts, basically everything," said Carrier. "Andy (Petree) tested the car Tuesday (August 31) at Greenville Pickens and ran about 60 laps to shake it down. We think it will perform better than the car we finished sixth with earlier this year."
