World Challenge: White, Plumb take Vancouver World Challenge Wins

6 September 1999

VANCOUVER, B.C.- Scotty B. White, of Puyallup, Wash., took his first-career Speedvision World Challenge win at the Molson Indy Vancouver, taking both overall and GT class honors. Hugh Plumb, of Chadds Ford, Pa., won the Touring Car class..his first victory of 1999.

White, who started fifth in the No. 97 Team NayKid Racing/Tom Henry Chevrolet Corvette C5, passed Paul Browns HP Motorsports Saleen Mustang on lap 12 of the 23-lap, 40.963-mile race, cruising to the first win for the latest-generation Corvette. Polesitter Peter Kitchak, of Excelsior, Minn., and Bobby Archer, of Ft. Worth, Texas, battled back from a first-lap melee to finish second and third.

"The car was in pieces after last weeks race in Grand Rapids and we werent going to even come to this race," said White. "But being so close to home, we pulled two all-nighters to put it back together and made it. This is a developmental car, and weve been getting better. I think even without all the incidents we would have been in the hunt, so were thrilled. This is kind of a hometown race."

The race started in chaos, as Kitchak, Archer and George Biskup came together and slid in to the runoff in turn one. Bill Coopers Corvette took the point, but only made it to turn three before finding the wall, handing the lead to Brown as the circuit went to caution. On the ensuing green, White passed for the lead, and Kitchak battled from last in a battered car which saw pit lane several times, including a stop-and-go, to make it past Archer, who also received a stop-and-go, on the final lap. White averaged 51.768 mph in his 5.494-second win. Brown held on to fourth, followed by Terry Lackey.

The finish tightened the points battle for GT, with Archer holding a one point lead (199-198) over Kitchak with two rounds remaining. In Touring Car, Plumb came out of a three-wide battle through the tight turn-10 chicane first on lap 21 to take the lead and a 1.871-second win over Michael Galati and Pierre Kleinubing. He averaged 51.349 mph.

After starting fourth in the No. 43 RealTime Racing Acura Integra R, Plumb watched Galati lead Kleinubing from a lap-11 restart until three laps from the end, when the lead duo got together.

"I just saw some daylight and went for it," said Plumb. "I think I hit the wall on the way out and I was thankful to make it through with all four wheels. Im happy to get the first win this year."

Kevin Schrantz and Alfred DuPont completed the top-five. The top-three finishers remained the top-three in Touring Car points, with Galati leading, with 202, followed by Plumb (186) and Kleinubing (184).
