ARCA Trucks: Chad Guinn Chews up ARCA Crystal Trucks

31 August 1999

by Don Radebaugh

Crystal MI - With 11 events in the books, Chad Guinn, aboard the Sonic Expedition Ford Ranger, became the eighth different winner in the new ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series Saturday night on the clay at Crystal Motor Speedway. Just as impressive, Guinn went to victory lane in the 50 lap main event in only his second-ever start on dirt, and in only his third start in the new touring series.

"I cant believe we did it," said Guinn in victory lane. "Ive only been on the dirt twice in my life. I thought we might have a shot somewhere on the pavement, but I sure didnt think our first win would come here. Robbin (Slaughter) sure raced me hard but raced me clean and Im thankful for that. But he gave me a handful and plenty to worry about. That guy is one heck of a racer. This series is great. We got a late start this year, but Id sure like to go after the championship next year." Guinns first truck start came on the clay recently at LaSalle Speedway where he finished a respectable fourth. Slaughter, in his Carmens Vacuum Sales-Ed & Company Ford, finished one length back in second ahead of David Clays HVAC Systems-M&M Precision Chevy who finished third. New point leader Bill Withers, in his Withers Foreign Auto-Mannings USA-Driveline 1 Ford was fourth and Troy Marciniak completed the top five finishers.

Withers controlled the race early on from his outside pole starting position and led the first 29 laps before Guinn, who started fifth, charged into the lead. Slaughter and Clay soon followed and went after the leader with a vengeance. Slaughter quickly caught the eventual winner and drove his truck underneath Guinn on several occasions but never mustered up enough steam to overhaul the new winner.

Withers was credited with the Cloyes Gear Halfway Leader honors and Bobby Marvin won the Ed & Company Hard Charger award for advancing the most positions, from 15th to seventh. Dave Reeb garnered the Hawk Best Brake of the Race and four-time ARCA Truck winner Aaron Hulings won the Hoosier Tire Pole award. The ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will next appear at Owosso Speedway on September 4th before joining the ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series on September 11th.
