USAC: Wheldon wins at PPIR, Claims 'Road to Indy' Oval Crown Title

31 August 1999

Englishman Dan Wheldon is the 1999 USAC "Road to Indy" Oval Crown F2000 Champion following his victory in Saturday's 50-mile race at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo.

Wheldon led all 50 laps in his Primus Racing/Jayhard Van Diemen Quicksilver to beat T.J. Bell, Andy Lally, Mark Dismore, Jr. and Jonathan Bottoms. The win also boosted Wheldon into the lead for the US F2000 National Championship, which concludes with a pair of races October 16-17 at Sebring (FL) International Raceway.

Wheldon started on the pole Saturday after posting the fastest qualifying time in Friday's trials. He now leads Marc-Antoine Camirand by five points in the battle for the National Championship. Camirand finished sixth in Saturday's race.
