NASCAR WCUP: Ken Schrader Michigan Preview

19 August 1999

SCHRADER'S THOUGHTS HEADING INTO THE MICHIGAN 400:

* "Michigan is not one of my favorite places to race," said Schrader. "I am not sure what it is about the flat tracks, but I don't seem to get around them as well as I like. We ran better in June than we had in the past five years. If we can improve on that performance, we should run a lot better this weekend."

CREW CHIEF SHOP TALK:

* "The entire Skoal Racing team made a lot of gains when we were here in June," said crew chief Sam Johns. "We qualified in the top five and ran in the top 10 for most of the race. The race went green for a long time and we only made three stops, which were all scheduled fuel stops. That type of racing limited us to what changes we could make to the car.

"We're taking the car we raced at California Speedway and in the Winston Open. We thought it was a good car, but felt that if we made a few aerodynamic changes that it could be a lot better. The guys in the engine shop have been working very hard to give Schrader some more horsepower. Michigan is one of those tracks where horsepower and aerodynamics are important and we hope we've given the best combination for this weekend."

SKOAL RACING TEAM NEWS:

* Schrader will sign autographs at the Skoal Racing Experience at Juniper Hills Campground on Saturday night from 5-7 p.m. The campground is located across the street from the tunnel entrance of Michigan International Speedway.
