NASCAR WCUP: Lowes team shake up for the Brickyard 400

31 July 1999

Lewis to Change Tires for the Brickyard 400

WELCOME, N.C. (July 30, 1999) -- Former front-tire changer Jack Lewis will dust off his air wrench for the Aug. 7 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse Racing.

Lewis will change front tires for the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet driven by Mike Skinner. The 36 year old will substitute for one race until a full-time replacement is named to the position recently vacated by Mike Lingerfelt. Lewis currently serves as a full-time fabricator for the No. 31 Lowe's Chevy. Team Manager David Smith said Lewis was the standout choice for the Brickyard 400.

"In tryouts this week, Jack picked up an air gun for the first time in more than a year and consistently nailed 14 and 15-second pit stops," Smith explained. "It's been a long time for him but he was, and still is, awfully good. He knows how important Indy is to Team Lowe's Racing, so he decided to come out of retirement."

Lewis has six years of experience as a tire changer, most recently with Skinner's teammate Dale Earnhardt in the No. 3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet. The Concord, N.C., resident was part of the team with which Earnhardt won the 1998 Daytona 500, and has worked in the NASCAR Winston Cup garage since 1988.

Lowe's Companies, Inc., is the second largest retailer of home improvement products in the nation, serving more than four million do-it-yourself retail and commercial business customers weekly in nearly 500 stores in 26 states. Headquartered in North Wilkesboro, N.C., the 52-year-old company employs more than 70,000 people. More information on the company is available on Lowe's web site at http://www.lowes.com.
