USAC: Young Captures Speedrome '50', Extends Point Lead

16 July 1999

Norm Young of Franklin, Ind. wheeled his Kelly Home Designs/IFI Flooring/Matlock Ford VW to victory in Wednesday night's 50-lap USAC Midget Car feature at the Indianapolis Speedrome. The victory extended his lead over four-time series titlist Michael Lang going into next Wednesday night's (July 21) Midget Car program at the 1/5-mile paved oval. Lang did not compete in Wednesday's events.

Young trailed defending series champion John Sluss for the first 36 laps until Sluss lost his power steering. On the restart, Young assumed command and led the final 14 laps for the win, beating Ron Hamm, Gregg Cory, Dave Parker and Dave Fuhrman to the checkered flag. Young and Daryl Campbell won the preliminary 15-lap heat races.
