14 July 1999
1998 Indy 500 winner, Eddie Cheever, will again race to raise funds for the kids of CURE Childhood CancerAtlanta, GA. - Hoping to increase it's fundraising efforts over last year, 1998 Indy 500 winner, Eddie Cheever and his #51 Children's Beverage Group/Team Cheever Dallara/Goodyear/Infiniti Indy racing team will be making every lap of the Kobalt Mechanics Tools 500 count on Saturday night, July 17th.
For a second straight year, Team Cheever has united with CURE Childhood Cancer in the "Racing For CURE" fundraiser. Atlanta's CURE volunteers are currently garnering pledges and flat donations for every lap that Eddie Cheever completes during Saturday's 320-mile/208-lap race. Last year's event raised over $4,000 for Georgia's children with cancer.
"We are delighted that the folks at CURE asked us to participate again this year," spoke Cheever of the fundraiser. "These kids are so brave, facing such odds daily, and always with a smile. I hope everyone will join the CURE "team" this weekend and help us beat last year's mark!"
CURE Childhood Cancer's mission is to fund cancer research and offer support programs to cancer stricken children and their families. While half of the funds raised are devoted to scientific endeavors, the remainder assists programs such as weekend retreats for parents and peer networking for the kids. Donations are currently being taken by calling CURE at 770-986-0035.
Cheever and several other Pep Boys Indy Racing league will also support the weekend cause by taking part in "Family Night at Atlanta Motor Speedway" when thirty CURE teenagers will watch the Indy Racing League practice sessions Friday night. The drivers will sign autographs and spend time throughout the evening with the kids.
The Kobalt Mechanics Tools 500 takes place Saturday, July 17th. The race starts at 730pm EDT and will be televised LIVE on Fox Sports Net. PPG Pole qualifying will air live on Speedvision on Friday, July 16th beginning at 6pm EDT.
