SPRINTS: All Star Sprint Ohio Speedweek Race Results - Attica Raceway Park
6 July 1999
ATTICA, OH - Kenny Jacobs stole the win from Byron Reed in the All Star sprint 17th annual Ohio Speedweek final 40-lap feature Saturday night at Attica Raceway Park. Jacobs fifth win of the season was worth $10,000. With a pair of wins this week, Joey Saldana was crowned the 1999 Ohio Speedweek champion in front of a sellout crowd. Following a caution with three laps to go, Jacobs was lined up third behind Reed and Kelly Kinser. Jacobs pushed his car into the high groove, around Reed and Kinser who ran the bottom, to win."I cant believe this," Jacobs said. "The Goodyear tires just cooled down on that yellow and I drove right through the middle of the track in one and two. They just locked down on that restart and thats what won the race for me." He credited his crew for their hard work all evening. "We had a sour motor tonight, we changed it after the heat race and the crew worked their tail off." Jacobs drove his own Eagle Chassis with Kriner-Chevrolet power with Barry Jackson as chief mechanic.
"I was just trying to pace myself," Reed said of his restart strategy. "I just had to stick with what I was doing on the bottom."
Reed started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot Seat pole position with Saldana alongside. Dean Jacobs and Mark Keegan started in row two with K. Kinser and K. Jacobs next. Ed Lynch Jr. was scheduled to start sixth, but broke a rear end when he was pushed off to start the A main and had to be sent pitside.
Saldana took off in the high groove and jumped to a nice lead over Reed, Keegan and Kinser. By the time Saldana entered lapped traffic on lap eight, Reed was right back on his tail, running the inside groove, and ducked under Saldana exiting turn two to lead lap 10. The battle for third was now a three way duel among Kinser, Keegan and D. Jacobs, running two or three wide every lap. Dale Blaney stopped on the track on lap 14, allowing everyone to catch their breath with the order Reed, Saldana, Kinser, D. Jacobs, Keegan and K. Jacobs. Reed pulled a wheelie partway down the front chute on the restart, but still kept the lead over Saldana, who was locked in a furious battle with Kinser for second. Kinser and Saldana ran side-by-side for several laps, trading second six times through heavy traffic the next six laps.
Reed appeared to have victory well in hand aboard the B&S Racing Kistler-powered Maxim as K. Jacobs grabbed third from Saldana on lap 34 with a low groove pass in turn three. But a yellow flew on lap 37 for a spun out D. Jacobs, who was fifth, changing the whole complexion of the race.
A three lap dash to the checkered was set with Jacobs pushing his number 6 into the high groove after the restart cone and passing Kinser and Reed high off turn two to lead the final mile on the 1/3 mile oval.
Saldana held on for fourth behind Kinser with Frankie Kerr coming on late in the race to grab fifth after starting 13th. Keegan was sixth with Paul McMahan finishing seventh, earning the "Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award. Rodney Duncan, Chad Kemenah and Jason Statler finished out the top ten.
The United Expressline heat fell to Dale Blaney, the Southwest Expressline heat to Joe Gaerte, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Chad Kemenah and the United Specialties heat went to Jim Nier. Dean Jacobs won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with Keegan the United Expressline B Main winner and Ed Lynch Jr. was the Ramsey Trucking fast qualifier, worth $300.
In limited late model action, Wayne Maffett Jr. won yet another feature over Jim Gingery, Mike Martini, Dale Aikman and Steve Sabo.
