TRACKS: Sawyer Takes Win in Coca-Cola 125, Rogers Spins and Wins the Sunbelt 125

6 July 1999

NEW SMYRNA. SPEEDWAY-- Shane Sawyer set the pace by qualifying first and setting the time to beat, for the Coca-Cola Late Model 125, which nobody did. Then Sawyer took the lead on the first lap and never looked backed. Sawyer was never had a hard challenge and seemed to be in cruise control as he mastered the 1/2 at New Smyrna Speedway Friday night. Chasing Sawyer was Chad Allman, Bill Ryan, Larry Osteen and Bobby Sears.

The Sunbelt Super Late Model Series 125 was full of fireworks as on the first turn of the first lap 10 cars failed to make the turn. The drivers involved were Travis Kittleson, Jacob Williams, Wayne Anderson, James Powell, III, Bruce Lawrence, Jimmy Cope, Rob Underwood, Mike Williams, Rickey Carter and the 07 car. All but Cope, and Bruce Lawrence return to the track. That was the first of two red flags and several caution as the drivers were driving hard for each position. The final caution came out with 10 laps to go when Wayne Anderson and the leader David Rogers tangled on the back stretch with both spinning. Race Officials deemed that Anderson deliberately took out Rogers and placed Rogers back in the lead and Anderson on the tail of the lead pack. Roger, who had lead the most laps and set fast time, went on to take the checkers. After Rogers was Pete Orr, Anderson, Jason Burkett, and rounding out the top five was Ricky Carter.

The support Modified 30 lapper was won by Tom Root.
