TRACKS: DeMoss Sizzles, But Tiller's Back on Top of Bloomington Modified Points

5 July 1999

BLOOMINGTON, IN - Back-to-back feature wins have quickly advanced John DeMoss into the top ten in Bloomington Speedway's UMP Modified division. With Kerry Norris skipping Bloomington's Friday night race, defending champion Matt Tiller, of Bloomington, returned to the division point lead. But Tiller's 15-point lead is less than secure with Ray Humphrey, Richie Lex and Jack Taylor in a hungry pack behind him. With a strong second place finish, Monrovia's Taylor climbed to fourth in the points, and is only 20 behind Tiller. Bloomington's Ray Humphrey is back in second, even though he had two off track excursions, and finished fifth in Friday's racing.

Bedford's Lee Hobbs continued to strengthen his point lead with a second place finish to Greg O'Neill in Bloomington's Indiana Street Stocks. O'Neill's first victory of the season moved him up to sixth in the series. Jerry Hepworth and Cory Brown continued to post strong finishes, but have to hope that Hobbs takes a vacation from the top of the results sheet to have shot at the championship.

Friday, July 9, the Pennzoil Cup sprint cars return to action at the Bloomington quarter-mile. The UMP Modifieds and Indiana Street Stocks will also be in competition. There will be an autograph session for fans to meet the drivers in the modified division and a ladies 'powder puff' race. The grandstand gates open at 5:30, with hot laps and qualifying an hour later. Racing starts at 7:45. General admission is just $10, kids 12 and under are FREE with an adult admission.
