ARCA Midgets: Sarah Fisher Sails in ARCA Midgets
5 July 1999
Springport, MI - Sarah Fisher made it two for two in the ARCA Auto Value Midget Series after winning the 30 lap main event Thursday night at Springport Speedway. The young talented second generation driver out of Ashville, Ohio overhauled Gene Lee Gibson on the 22nd circuit to take the lead and her second career ARCA Midget victory in as many attempts.Defending ARCA Midget champion and current point leader Gibson finished second ahead of Ronnie Johncox, Dave Baumgartner and Travis Welpot to complete the top five.
Polesitter and 1997 ARCA Midget champion Jerry Nemire led at the onset while all-time ARCA Midget winner Jim Hettinger gave chase. Nemire managed to hold off Hettinger until there was contact between the two front-runners in turn one on the 16th lap. The incident brought out the caution flag and sent both veteran drivers to the tail end for the restart. From there Gibson set the pace with Fisher, who started 10th, glued to his rear bumper until the eventual winner made her winning move. Hettinger battled back to finish sixth ahead of his son Chris who finished seventh in his first ARCA Midget start after starting 19th. Jim Sawyer, Jason Fuller and Nemire finished out the top ten. Fisher also set quick time of the night at 14.270 seconds and Johncox and Jimmy McCune won heats.
Next action for the ARCA Auto Value Midget Series will be at Kalamazoo Speedway on July 14th.
