USAC: Gerster, Nuetzel Midget Car Victors

2 July 1999

SPEEDROME CONTINUES WED.; MCI WORLDCOM IDLE UNTIL JULY 31

Brian Gerster and Adam Nuetzel rank sixth in their respective USAC Midget Car series standings but Wednesday night they stood at the head of the class after feature victories.

Gerster, of Indianapolis, Ind., led the remaining 38 laps of the rain-interrupted "Thomson Indiana 40" at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway. The race was halted June 16 after two laps had been completed. Gerster resumed his race lead Wednesday night and put his Fastener Sales & Engineering/Invincible Sportswear/Brayton in the winner's circle, beating Dane Carter, Jimmy McCune, Jerry Coons, Jr. and Sarah McCune to the checkered flag. MCI WorldCom National Midget Car point leader Jason Leffler failed to finish the 40-lapper but still leads Ryan Newman by 12 points in the standings as the series takes a hiatus while it prepares for a July 31 return to the 1/4-mile paved Anderson oval.

Adam Nuetzel of Indianapolis, Ind. scored his initial victory in the Indianapolis Speedrome Midget Car Series Wednesday night, leading the final 10 laps of a hotly-contested 50-lapper at the 1/5-mile paved oval in his Cooprider Auto Service VW. Nuetzel took the lead for good when Daryl Campbell's machine dropped oil on the track on lap 41. Nuetzel then held off a determined bid from Gregg Cory to win the race. Ed Hair, Ron Hamm and Ric Burdine rounded out the "top-five." Mike Schuyler, Cory, Campbell and Nuetzel all took turns leading the 50-lap race.

Speedrome series point leader Michael Lang finished 13th in the Anderson race but failed to make it back in time to compete at the Speedrome. He continues to hold a slim lead over Norm Young in the standings going into next Wednesday night's (July 7) Speedrome event.
