It's A Day of Firsts For NASCAR Trucks At Watkins Glen

26 June 1999

Practice and qualifying sessions for the Bully Hill Vineyards 150 were pushed back at Watkins Glen International because of steady morning rain showers. However once practice started, history was made as NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) drivers experienced what it was like to practice on Goodyear rain tires for the very first time in the series' existence. In fact, Friday's practice session marked the first time that any NASCAR division had used rain tires in a championship points event.

By the time NCTS qualifying started, the track had dried significantly enabling drivers to run on their normal race tires, which made the choice of truck set-ups into a real guessing game.

Qualifying was also run in "European Style" format for the first time in NCTS history meaning that groups of five trucks ran together on track for five-minute sessions. Most drivers seemed to enjoy the change.
