IRL: Brack Searching for First Career Pole

26 June 1999

Indy Winner Fastest In Radisson 200 Practice

FOUNTAIN, Colo., - Defending winner Kenny Brack is aiming for his first career PPG Pole after posting the fastest speed in practice Thursday for this Sunday's Radisson 200 at Pikes Peak International Raceway.

Brack, from Karlstad, Sweden, covered the 1-mile tri-oval in 20.584 seconds (174.893 mph) in the A.J. Foyt PowerTeam Racing Dallara/Aurora/Goodyear. Brack won the Radisson 200 last year despite running out of fuel in Turn 4 on the last lap to coast across the finish line.

Though Brack said he would like to win the PPG Pole, he is focusing on Sunday's race.

"I never put any emphasis on qualifying," said Brack. "I like to be up front, sure, but I don't like to tune the car for a few good laps, and one good lap in qualifying."

Qualifying for the Radisson 200 starts at 1 p.m. (MDT) Saturday and will be broadcast live on SpeedVision. The Radisson 200 starts at noon Sunday and will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Net.

Rookie John Hollansworth Jr. posted the second-best lap of the day, 20.608 (174.689 mph) during the afternoon session in the CompuCom-Lycos Dallara/Aurora/Firestone. Tyce Carlson was third fastest at 20.646 (174.368) in the Blueprint-Immke Racing Dallara/Aurora/Firestone. Greg Ray was fourth fastest in his backup Glidden-Menards Dallara/Aurora/Firestone at 20.663 (174.224).

Scott Sharp and Sam Schmidt both posted laps of 20.726 (173.695) during the morning session to tie for fifth fastest of the day.

Pep Boys Indy Racing League points leader Scott Goodyear was 11th fastest at 20.881 (172.406) in his backup Pennzoil Panther G Force/Aurora/Goodyear.

Scott Harrington, driving with a broken right fibula suffered in a practice crash at Texas Motor Speedway on June 11, qualified his The CertainTeed Building Products Special Dallara/Aurora/Firestone in ninth.
