Tracks: Norris Grabs Point Lead in Bloomington Modifieds
23 June 1999
BLOOMINGTON, IN - Kerry Norris lost last Friday's main event by five car lengths, but grabbed the point lead in Bloomington Speedway's UMP modified division. It was a battle featuring a couple of sprint car veterans who have moved into modified racing in just the last several seasons. Gary Trammell's rear end was going out, and after holding off Norris, the car shot off a spectacular pyrotechnic display when the rear end failed just after the checkers. This is the first time Norris, from Columbus, has led the Bloomington points in a modified. Bloomington's Matt Tiller made the biggest jump on Friday, from fourth to second, and sits only 14 points behind. Ray Humphrey, Richie Lex and Jack Taylor all remain in striking distance. At sixth in the points, Levi Ray Godsey is making a strong run for the Rookie of the Year award in the open wheel modified division.
Lee Hobbs continues to pace the Indiana Street Stocks although Jerry Hepworth, Don Bush Jr., Cory Brown and Steve Hunt are still in the battle, and every time Perry Bruce appears ready to make a big charge, he runs into more problems. In recent weeks his motor has been troubled with overheating, and last Friday, Bruce made another early departure while leading.
In the Pennzoil Cup sprint cars, while Derek Scheffel gets closer to repeating as the champion, Kenny Carmichael just won't go away. He's only 35 points behind, and with the right combination of circumstances, Scheffel's lead could evaporate quickly. The Pennzoil Cup sprint car points did not compete last week, but return to the oval this Friday.
