USAC: Anderson, 16th Street & Salem Host Midget Cars

The MCI WorldCom USAC National Midget Car Series faces a busy slate this week, with three Indiana races expected to weigh heavily in the battle for championship points.Ryan Newman of South Bend, Ind. leads Ricky Shelton of Huntington Beach, Calif. by 12 points going into Wednesday night's nationally-televised (ESPN2) race at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway. Newman is going for a third consecutive series triumph after May 29 and June 6 victories at Indianapolis Raceway Park and Winchester Speedway. Shelton will be seeking his first 1999 victory after winning six races on his way to third in the 1998 standings.
Practice at Anderson's 1/4-mile paved oval starts at 5:30 pm, with qualifying at 6:30 and racing at 7:30. The feature is a 40-lapper.
The MCI WorldCom Midget Cars return to the 16th Street Speedway in Indianapolis, Ind. Saturday night before visiting the Salem (Ind.) Speedway on Sunday afternoon. Saturday night's races at 16th Street get under way with practice at 4:30, followed by qualifying at 5:30 and racing at 7. A 40-lap race concludes the action on the 1/4-mile dirt. Sunday's Salem events are part of a "doubleheader," also featuring the Stoops Freightliner USAC Sprint Cars. Practice at the 1/2-mile paved oval starts at 11:30 am, with qualifying slated at 1 pm and racing at 2. A 30-lap Midget Car feature is on tap.
