IRL: Friday Qualifying Notes from Texas, Greg Ray
12 June 1999
Greg Ray today recorded the third-fastest time in final practice for Saturday night's Longhorn 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Driving the #2 Glidden-Menards Dallara/Aurora/Firestone entry of Team Menard, Ray toured the 1.5-mile TMS oval in 24.399 seconds (an average of 214.681 mph). Ray will start Saturday's race from the fourth spot on the grid. On Thursday night, he qualified fourth 24.499 seconds (213.805 mph). Race time is 6:30 p.m. CDT on Saturday and it will be carried live by Fox Sports Net.GREG RAY - "It's going to be a dogfight tomorrow night. A great number of cars are all even, from a racing standpoint, so you can expect a NASCAR-style restrictor plate race. A real dog-eat-dog test of survival. The (10,000 rpm) rev limit and the (mandatory) 6-degree wing setting really lessens the driver's part of the equation. I've got my foot in it all the way around the track and we're going slower than ever. We've got a few things to work on, yet, before the race."
