Paul Tracy (KOOL Honda Reynard) will be seeking his third career pole at The Milwaukee Mile when qualifying gets under way Saturday afternoon. He earned the 1996 pole when the starting grid was based on practice times due to a rainout of qualifying, then claimed the 1997 pole at an average speed of 184.286 mph (20.160 seconds). Tracy also won the 1995 FedEx Championship Series event at Milwaukee and finished third in 1994 and 96.

Greg Moore (Players Forsythe Racing Ltd. Mercedes Reynard) is seeking his best start since winning the pole for the season opener at Homestead. His 1997 victory at Milwaukee made him the youngest race winner in CART history, at age 22 years, 1 month and 10 days.

Patrick Carpentier (Players Forsythe Racing Ltd. Mercedes Reynard) will be seeking his second consecutive pole at Milwaukee when qualifying gets under way at 2:15 p.m. ET Saturday. Carpentier set a track record of 185.500 mph (20.028 seconds) while winning the pole for last years event.

Championship Auto Racing Teams announced Friday that all cars competing in the FedEx Championship Series will be required to utilize rear-wheel energy absorbing restraints beginning with the series next oval event, the U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota, July 23-25 at Michigan Speedway. The decision to add the rear restraints was announced by CART Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Andrew Craig. CART began requiring front restraints on its Champ Cars at the May 29 Motorola 300 at Gateway International Raceway. CARTs two development series .. the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship and the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship.. will also begin running front and rear wheel restraints at their next oval events. The next Indy Lights oval event is the U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota at Michigan while the next oval test for the Atlantics is the Aug. 19-21 Target Grand Prix at Chicago Motor Speedway. Additionally, CART announced that the pit speed limit at FedEx Championship Series events has been reduced from 60 miles per hour to a maximum of 50 mph for all phases of competition. Also, it was announced that all crew members who go over the wall during a Champ Car pit stop will be required to wear helmets. The rule will take effect beginning with the opening day of practice for the June 27 Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by Firstar at Burke Lakefront Airport.
