USAC: Lang Aims for Historic #50 June 9 After Speedrome Triumph
4 June 1999
Michael Lang of Indianapolis, Ind. scored a record 49th career feature victory in the Indianapolis Speedrome Midget Car Series Wednesday night and will try for a historic 50th triumph when the series continues next Wednesday night (June 9) at the 1/5-mile paved oval.Lang finally caught a determined Daryl Campbell when Campbell's machine suffered a broken left front shock with only four laps remaining in the 50-lap race. Lang then led the final four circuits in his AdTech/Keco/Symbol Mattress Company/IFI Fontana-powered machine.
Campbell slipped to third behind series point leader Norm Young on the final lap. Jeff McCloud and 1998 series "Rookie of the Year" Gregg Cory rounded out the "top-five." Campbell and Cory won the two 15-lap preliminary heat races.
Lang has compiled nearly twice as many career feature wins as the late Rich Vogler at the Speedrome. Vogler had 26, while Mel Kenyon ranks third all-time with 20. Lang won the Speedrome Midget Car title four years in a row (1994-1997) but lost to John Sluss last year. His victory Wednesday boosted him to second behind Young in the 1999 standings.
