USAC/F2000: Camirand, Wheldon Claim Mosport F2 Victories

25 May 1999

JUSTUS PENALIZED 1 LAP AFTER LEADING WIRE-TO-WIRE IN RACE 2

Canadian Marc-Antoine Camirand and Englishman Dan Wheldon continued their torrid battle for the 1999 USAC/SCCA United States Formula 2000 National Championship with victories in weekend action at Mosport International Raceway near Toronto, Canada.

Camirand passed Wheldon on the second lap of Saturday's 20-lapper around the 2.459-mile course and led the rest of the way in his Key Tours Van Diemen to beat Aaron Justus, Bobby Oergel, Mark Dismore, Jr. and Steve Rikert. Wheldon slid off the course in turn five and was relegated to a 24th-place finish, which heavily impacted the point race.

Justus, of Vista, Calif., led all 20 laps of Sunday's 20-lap race but was penalized one lap for passing under the yellow flag late in the race, leaving Wheldon as the race winner in his Primus Racing Van Diemen. Camirand took second ahead of Oergel, Rikert and Bryce Miller, while Justus, the 1995 Russell Racing School's Championship Series titlist who won the pole starting position for both races, was officially credited with 14th place.

Camirand emerged with just a two-point lead over Wheldon in the new series standings going into a June 6 date at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course at Lexington, Ohio.

New Yorkers George Forgeois of New York City and Guy Cosmo of South Setauket claimed the American Continental Championship class titles for older cars with their respective finishing positions.
