PSCR: Schroeder's Back and Leading the Pack

22 May 1999

SCHROEDER'S BACK AND LEADING THE PACK; HAYNER WITH HUFFAKER/QVALE; RAEL TO MAKE HIS TRANS-AM DEBUT

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Can. Dorsey Schroeder, set to make his first Trans-Am start since 1997, stepped into Bruce Barkelew's No. 7 Hedonism Ford Mustang Cobra and promptly set the quick time in Friday's first practice session for Sunday's 40-lap, 98.36-mile BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series race at Mosport International Raceway.

"I want the best driver I can put in the car, and if it was do-able with Speedvision, then Dorsey was the obvious choice when Boris (Said) wasn't able to drive the car this weekend," said RaceWerX team owner Barkelew. Schroeder will provide double duty during the race, providing The Speedvision Network with color commentary, only this time from behind the wheel of his race car.

"I'll be live during the whole first lap, and then have a live microphone throughout the entire race," said Schroeder, who scored Mosport Trans-Am wins in 1990 and 1995. "In one earphone I'll have my team communication, and in the other earphone I'll be able to hear the TV director and broadcast boothit should be pretty exciting."

Schroeder posted the top time of 1:21.823 (108.18 mph), followed by Chris Neville at 1:22.119 (107.79 mph), Paul Gentilozzi, Brian Simo and Stu Hayner.

Hayner, who crashed hard enough at the Long Beach season-opener that his No. 58 Westward Ho Casino Camaro couldn't be repaired in time for the Mosport contest, will drive the No. 43 Huffaker/Qvale Ford Mustang Cobra this weekend. Making his debut this weekend is Canadian Rael, of Valcourt, Ontario, Can., who will drive the No. 9 UFO Land Chevrolet Camaro.
