PARTS Trucks: Gafnea Grabs PARTS Truck Win at Anderson
18 May 1999
ANDERSON, S.C. - Butch Gafnea of McCalla, Ala. used his truck from last year to win the Synzone 100 at Anderson Motor Speedway May 14. Gafneas new truck was destroyed in the last PARTS Pro Truck Series race at Concord Motorsports Park.Pulling the truck out of mothballs, Gafnea scored his first win of the season in the Professional Association of Racing Trucks series. The victory broke the three-race winning streak of Randy Gilbert, who had to settle for fifth this time out.
Gafnea, the 1998 PARTS Rookie of the Year, had constant pressure from last seasons champion Kevin Barrett in the first half of the race. The two trucks appeared to be welded at the bumpers, as they led the rest of the field.
When a tire started going down on Barretts truck, that ended on battle, but set up another. Fredrick Moore assumed the second spot and applied the pressure to Gafnea, but to no avail, as Gafnea was able to handle the heat.
Following Gafnea to the checkered flag was Moore, Dusty Williams, John Wilkinson, III and Gilbert.
In Division II action, it was James Glover, Mike Davidson, Bill Melvin and Casey Yunick taking the top four spots and transferring to the 100-lap national event.
Dusty Vinson of Franklin, N.C. won his second race of the season in PARTS Division III competition. Finishing second was Damian Burke, followed by Linny Foster, Jeff Firestine and Rod Burton.
The next event for the PARTS Pro Truck Series will be the $10,000 to win, Snakebite 100 at South Alabama Speedway in Opp, Ala. on June 5. For additional information, call (706)653-8990)
