NASCAR WCUP: Schrader Heads to One of his Favoritie Tracks

14 May 1999

* "Richmond has been one of my favorite tracks on the circuit," said Schrader. "The Sawyers have done an incredible job with the speedway. It's definitely a track that has been good to me through the years. We finished fourth at both races last year so we're looking to improve on that.

"We spent this week testing the Skoal Racing Monte Carlo at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, Fla. The track is very similar in size and shape as Richmond. We took the same Winston Cup car that we raced last year. We knew it was a car capable of finishing in the top five, but we wanted to make it a car capable of winning the race. We changed some minor things, but basically we shook it down and tweaked a few areas. Terry Labonte was also in Lakeland and we ran competitive times to him. Having the No.. 5 team there gave us someone to compare our times to."

CREW CHIEF SHOP TALK:

* "We were pleased with the way the test went in Lakeland," said Sam Johns. "He has such a good feel for the car. He knows how far to drive into the corners and when to brake. Kenny is just a natural at the smaller tracks."

SKOAL RACING TEAM NEWS:

* In preparation for The Winston and the Coca-Cola 600 , the Skoal Racing team participated in the General Motors test session last week at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The team posted the fourth-fastest time of approximately 20 teams.

* Schrader will compete in the Hardee's 250 Busch Series event at Richmond on Friday in the No. 15 Oakwood Homes Monte Carlo.
