RICHMOND = HOMETOWN X 2: Mechanicsville, Virginia (Richmond suburb) resident Kevin Grubb can't say enough about the excitement of racing in his hometown. The 21-year-old driver looks forward to each and every time NASCAR stages an event at Richmond International Raceway.
"There's nothing like being home," said Grubb. "Most of the teams and drivers call Charlotte, NC home, but not me. I've spent my whole life in Richmond.
Home field advantage is crucial in many sports, but don't count on it to help Grubb in the Hardee's 250. In three starts, he has just one top 10 finish.
"I definitely don't think I have a home field advantage," said Grubb. "The track really isn't one of my favorites nor have I had too much success there. Don't get me wrong. The Sawyer's have a fantastic facility. It's great for the fans and competitors, and the competition is fierce. Richmond is a tough track. It's just that I like racing on banked tracks. The only advantage I have is knowing that a bunch of my friends and family are at the race."
Grubb isn't the only part of the Brewco Motorsports team who calls Richmond home. Swedish Match NA, the producers of Timber Wolf moist snuff, has its corporate offices in Richmond. Timber Wolf has been associated with the Brewco Motorsports team since 1996.
"This season, Swedish Match employees will also be in the stands pulling for me and the No. 37," said Grubb. "With all the people coming out to see us, the Sawyer's will need to build more stands. A win in Richmond, with a Richmond driver and Richmond sponsor would be awesome."
KEVIN GRUBB/RIR QUICK FACTS: In three starts at Richmond International Raceway (two NASCAR Busch Series, one NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series), Mechanicsville, Virginia resident Kevin Grubb's average start on the 0.75 mile oval is 10th.
ASSOCIATE SPONSOR: Crown, a convenience store chain, is an associate sponsor on the No. 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolet Monte Carlo for the Hardee's 250 at Richmond International Raceway.
