USAC: MCI Worldcom Midget Cars Resume after 3-Month 'Layoff'

11 May 1999

The 1999 MCI WorldCom USAC National Midget Car Series resumes this Saturday night at the Louisville (Ky.) Motor Speedway after a three-month layoff which included rainouts at Winchester, Ind. April 18 and Kokomo, Ind. April 24.

Defending series champion Jason Leffler of Long Beach, Calif. continues to lead the standings after winning the "Copper World Classic" series opener February 7 at Phoenix, Ariz. Ryan Newman, second at Phoenix, trails Leffler by nine points going into Saturday night's events.

Eleven drivers eclipsed Louisville's 1-lap track qualifying record in Stoops Freightliner/USAC Sprint Car qualifying May 5, so Ricky Shelton's record of 14.134 seconds is expected to be in jeopardy this Saturday. Practice at Louisville begins at 5 pm and qualifying starts at 6. The first race is at 7 and the feature is a 30-lapper on the 7/16-mile pavement.
