NASCAR-BGN: Sawyer Holds on to Third in Busch Series Points Standings

4 May 1999

FONTANA, Calif.-- Lysol Racing driver Elton Sawyer remains third in the NASCAR Busch Series standings after he finished seventh in Saturdays Auto Club 300 at California Speedway.

Sawyer has finished in the top 10 six times this year, a vast improvement from 1998. Last season, he did not earn his sixth top-10 finish until July 5 at The Milwaukee Mile.

"We are pleased with seventh," said Sawyer, who is 143 points behind Dale Earnhardt Jr. and 48 points behind Matt Kenseth in the standings. "We didnt have the best car. Our car was tight off the corners no matter what we did. Rick Viers and this Lysol crew did everything possible to help free us up. They made air pressure, track bar and wedge adjustments. I even tried to run different lines, but we still couldnt get the car to stop pushing.

"Starting up front is always important, and starting third definitely aided our effort," Sawyer continued. "It allowed us to stay out of trouble all day and keep the leaders within sight."

Since qualifying was rained out on Friday, Sawyer started third as the majority of the qualifying positions was set by the points standings.

The Lysol Racing team travels to Loudon, N.H., for this Saturdays race. Coverage of the race will be on MRN and TNN.
