Rallye Catalunya: End of Leg 2
22 April 1999
Great disappointment for Citron this morning - overnight rally leader, Jesus Puras, could not start his car in Parc Ferme due to an ignition pack problem and he did not start todays stages. Jess Puras (Citron): "I am very disappointed. I really wanted to obtain a good result. We have tried everything to start the car, but we have not been able to do anything."But on a lighter side, Citron team mate Philippe Bugalski extended his lead over the WRC cars of Auriol and Sainz to lead the rally by almost 18 seconds. Bugalski and Auriol have been matching stage times all day.
Philippe Bugalski (Citron): "Today we did a good job, but tomorrow we will have to continue fighting. If nothing strange happens we will risk ourselves with Auriol. I know he will attack strongly, but if everything goes well, the car will resist".
Sainz had a puncture today which lost him some time and he now battles with Freddy Loix for 3rd place. "The goal is to be third no matter what, and we are very pressured by Freddy Loix. The car goes well and we are on the right track" said Sainz.
Loix is only 5 seconds behind Sainz in 4th: "To be in fourth is nice, but we have some work to do; 60 per cent for me and 40 per cent for the car. I have to change my driving style a bit, which is not so easy", Loix said.
Drama on SS10 this morning when Makinen, Burns and Rovanper were all penalised for a false start. If it were not for this, Makinen would now be in 3rd place.
McRae's problem yesterday was a valve in the cars anti-lag system which failed and prevented the turbocharger from developing full boost pressure. Ford are now using Catalunya as a test session for Corsica which is only 2 weeks away. But what a test session - McRae set 2 fastest stage times, a 2nd fastest and a 4th fastest in today's 6 stages! (McRae is now 18th overall). Unfortunately for Ford, Jean-Joseph retired due to an electical problem on SS13.
Skoda had a disappointing day with both cars retiring. Armin Schwarz had engine power and alternator problems.
Lopes retired after crashing.
