IRL: Scott Goodyears Racing Showcar Stolen
3 April 1999
Indianapolis, IN-- The Pennzoil Panther Racing Showcar was stolen sometime during the night in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The Showcar had been in Canada to announce the beginning of a promotional giveaway to the Indy 500 sponsored by Pennzoil and Sunoco. "This is bizarre. They took the whole thing, the truck and the trailer with the Showcar. I doubt the people knew what they were stealing, but boy are they in for a shock" said Pennzoil Panther Racing Team Owner John Barnes. The Pennzoil Panther Racing Showcar was brought into Canada on Tuesday evening then used on Wednesday for an appearance with Pep Boys Indy Racing League driver Scott Goodyear for the announcement. The car was then to be displayed at Sunoco gas stations throughout Ontario to promote the Indy 500 ticket giveaway. Goodyear, a Toronto native, just won the Phoenix MCI Worldcom 200 race on Sunday. Goodyear was shocked when he heard the news. "I guess I have more fans in Canada than I thought," Goodyear said tongue in cheek. "I didnt realize that winning the Phoenix MCI Worldcom 200 would create a frenzy big enough to steal the Showcar."
On a more serious note, if anyone sees the truck, the trailer or Showcar, they are urged to contact the local police. Unfortunately the final two appearance dates in Canada have been cancelled.
