NASCAR BGN: Timber Wolf Racing Crew Chief Terry Shirley Hospitalized

20 March 1999

Darlington, SC-- Terry Shirley, crew chief of Brewco Motorsports No. 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolet with driver Kevin Grubb in the NASCAR Busch Series, was hospitalized yesterday after complaining of chest pains and will not handle the crew chief duties in Saturday's Diamond Hill Plywood 200 at Darlington Raceway.

Shirley, a resident of Seymour, Indiana, was admitted to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, South Carolina and underwent a series of tests. After the results returned negative, the doctors decided to keep him overnight for observation. He is expected to be released later this afternoon.

Brewco Motorsports President Clarence Brewer, Jr has recruited the help of veteran crew chief Bobby King to serve as team leader of the Timber Wolf Racing team this weekend.

"We hate to see Terry feeling bad," said Brewer. "He's been working very hard lately and just needs a rest. I have total confidence in Terry's ability as a crew chief and hope he returns very soon. We wish him well."

King normally handles the crew chief duties full-time for Grubb Motorsports No. 83 Link-Belt Construction Chevrolet with driver Wayne Grubb - Kevin's brother. Due to Wayne's shoulder injury, sustained in an accident last week at Atlanta Motor Speedway, GrubbMotorsports has called upon NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek to drive the No. 83 car on Saturday.

"Jeff Buckner (Team Manager) and the guys can handle the car fine," said King. "Joe knows a lot about setting up race cars plus we tested with Wayne and the car was awesome. I think the No. 83 is gonna be really good."

This isn't King's first stint with Kevin Grubb. Prior to the 1999 season, King served as crew chief for the Mechanicsville, Virginia resident in each of his starts in the NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

"I've worked with him in the past," added King. "Kevin's a good race car driver and we communicate well. I'm looking forward to working with him again."
