RALLY: Toshiba Equium Irish Tarmac Rally Championships

7 March 1999

PIRELLI ANNOUNCE SUPPORT FOR JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Pirelli has announced a support package for the winner of the 1999 Junior Champion in the Toshiba Equium Irish Tarmac Rally Championship.

The winner of this year's championship will receive tyres to the value of 3000 and a free entry in next year's Pirelli Cumbria rally which is a round of the British Open Championship.

To qualify for the Pirelli Junior Championship award, drivers must have been born after 1/1/1970 and be running a car in either Group 'N', Group 'A' or modified specification provided it has a maximum capacity of 1650ccs. Points will be awarded to eligible drivers on the same basis as the overall awards system.

TROA (Tarmac Rally Organisers Association) view this junior championship as an important launch pad for young drivers. Welcoming this generous level of support from Pirelli, the championship manager Don Wilmont hoped that "this would only be the first of a number of category support schemes which would be introduced into the championship" and he urged as many young drivers as possible to register and battle for the chance to test their skills in the British championship with the benefit of trade support from a major tyre supplier.

Further rounds of the 1999 Toshiba Equium Championship include:

1/2 May Gleneagle International Rally of the Lakes
18/20 June Shell Donegal International Rally
30/31 July Stena Line Ulster Rally
