IHRA: Scott Weney Hoping to Do One Better in 1999

7 March 1999

DARLINGTON, SC-- Chances are, if you ask veteran Pro Alcohol Funny Car racer Scott Weney will quickly respond Darlington International Dragway. Its easy to understand why the chassis builder from Spring City, Pa., has these overwhelming feelings for the legendary facility. He seems to win more times than he loses at DID and he offers no reasoning for his success.

"All I can say is that this is an extremely good race track," explains Weney. "We always seem to run well here. Most of the time that we run here, it is early in the season and are parts are really fresh.Years ago it used to be one lane race track, but since they repaved it, it is an even deal in terms of quality. That enables us more data during te course of the event and helps us to gain an advantage."

Weney has four career victories at Darlington with the most recent victory coming at last seasons Southern Nationals. The second-generation racer, who cut his racing teeth in his dad Walts alky dragster, finished runner-up on the Snap-On Series to Von Smith.

One thing that makes Weneys feat and tradition within the Darlington arena is that he usually comes to the event with no testing whatsoever. Thats no problem for him as he feels that all he has to do is to look in their notes to develop a baseline. His testing essentially comes during the course of an event. Weney contends that his routine doesnt hurt his chances for the championship.

Weney will bring in a new associate sponsor in the form of Lucas Oil and will once again pilot the Ken Sheetz-owned, Pontiac Firebird flopper. He plans to open his championship conquest at the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals in Darlington, S.C., March 12-14. Weney, along with each Pro Alcohol Funny Car contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRAs Drag Review magazine.
