MANY TEAM CHANGES MADE FOR NEW SEASON
BECHTELSVILLE, PA MARCH 8, 1999 . . . "Gather up the family and come on out. Enjoy an opportunity to see many of the racers testing their new equipment. And it will all be free," said event organizer Bruce Rogers, when asked about the season opening practice day at Grandview Speedway.
As has become a tradition at the popular NASCAR sanctioned auto racing facility, the Bechtelsville, PA clay oval offers fans and even those who may just want to see what NASCAR stock car racing is all about, the opportunity to attend their March 27th practice session FREE.
The practice session is open to all racers that may have interest in running at Grandview Speedway in 1999. Spectators will see NASCAR Modifieds, Late Models, Sportsman, sprint cars and other types of race cars at the four hour session. "It is the final opportunity for our Saturday night racers to test and tune their equipment before the season officially gets started on Saturday, April 3," said Rogers.
And there is a lot of interest in stock car racing at Grandview Speedway since the track is part of the NASCAR Winston Racing Series which offers the modified racers a chance to share in more than $1-million in point fund money.
Fans coming out for the season opener on Saturday, April 3, will have to get a program book. There have been a lot of changes in teams for the 1999 season.
Defending track champion Ray Swinehart has put together his own team for the news season. And Mike Kelly, who had Swinehart in his car for championship effort in 1998 will have former champion Tom Mayberry at the wheel this year.
Veteran campaigner John Willman will replaced the now retired Randy Bailey in the #1T modified. Jon Kellner, a many time late model champion and top modified campaigner, will be driving the Norm Hansell owned #357 modified. Hansell always fields top equipment.
Long time campaigners Jack Hartnett and Ed Aikin have new equipment for the season. Aikin will be in a T&C Hobbies sponsored entry while Hartnett will field his own entry. Kenny Gilmore, always a contender for the track title, moves to the Nick Esposito #19 which has been vacated by Jack Hartnett. Kevin Hartnett, one of the top young talents at Grandview Speedway, will move to the Candyland Express #14 vacated by Kenny Gilmore.
This is just a sample of some of the many changes that have been made during the off season. "The changes make it difficult to pick who the top runners will be. However it also makes for some exciting racing and that is what brings the fans out to Grandview Speedway," said Kenny Rogers who assists his dad in the operation of the Bechtelsville oval.
Grandview Speedway, a one-third-mile clay banked oval, will be kicking off their 37th consecutive season of professional stock car racing when the free-to-the-public is presented on Saturday, March 27th at noon. And fans are reminded that there will be a 5 p.m. starting time in place for all events presented in April. The April 3 season opener will include the NASCAR Modifieds, Sportsman and Late Models. The modifieds will run in a 37-lap feature.
