CART: Bobby Rahal Foundation to Return $400,000 to CART Communities in 1999

6 February 1999

Bobby Rahal
HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- The philanthropic foundation created by three-time PPG Cup champion Bobby Rahal to commemorate his final racing season will donate more than $400,000 to children's organizations and charitable causes in race communities around the country during the 1999 CART FedEx Championship Series season.

The Bobby Rahal Foundation, the not-for-profit endowment created by the two-time Driver of the Year and 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner to generate and distribute charitable funds raised during 1998's Rahal's Last Ride tour, collected $400,640 through special events, corporate gifts, private donations and unique sponsorships. The money will be reinvested in youth and family programs and health research efforts nationwide.

The foundation's Board of Directors has identified many worthwhile organizations within the race markets the CART series visits in 1999 to share foundation donations. Check presentations will be made at CART events throughout the season. The first will be made during the season-opening Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami, at which the Buoniconti Fund will receive a $17,000 donation to benefit the Miami Project To Cure Paralysis.

"I'm truly flattered by the outpouring of support this program generated and thrilled at the opportunity to help so many valuable organizations," Rahal said. "I want to thank our sponsors, fans and friends for their generous participation, and our Board of Directors for their service and stewardship. Racing has enriched my life. Now, through the good work of the foundation, it's going to enrich the lives of others."

Founded in 1997, The Bobby Rahal Foundation is a component fund of The Columbus Foundation. Rahal is joined on the foundation's Board of Directors by Andrew Craig of Championship Auto Racing Teams; Mike Welsh of Miller Brewing Company; Chuck Shepherd of Shell Oil Company; Michelle Trueman Gajoch of Truesports; and Robert Vladem of Vladem, Lerman, Sweeney & Company.
