NHRA: Checker-Schuck's-Kragen to Sponsor NHRA Event at Phoenix

22 January 1999

GLENDORA, Calif. -- CSK Auto, Inc., the Phoenix-based parent company of Checker, Schucks and Kragen Auto Parts stores, has reached a multi-year agreement with the National Hot Rod Association to sponsor the NHRA national event at Firebird International Raceway, NHRA President Dallas Gardner announced.

The 15th annual Checker-Schuck's-Kragen Nationals presented by Pennzoil is scheduled for Feb. 25-28 at Firebird International Raceway, near Phoenix. The race is the second of 22 events in the $40-million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series in 1999.

"Weve known for some time that NHRA events make sense for us," said Joe Spica, Checker, Schucks and Kragen sales promotions manager. "Our customer base is full of do-it-yourself car owners who enjoy the technology and the thrills of NHRA action. With this program, we can reinforce our image with these customers and reach new customers."

It is the first NHRA event sponsorship for Checker-Schuck's-Kragen Auto Parts. The company started its involvement with NHRA Winston Drag Racing in 1998 by becoming the primary sponsor for Del Worsham's Pontiac Firebird Funny Car.

"It's gratifying to see a new and exciting company like Checker, Schuck's and Kragen Auto Parts get involved with the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series as an event title sponsor," said Gardner. "We're confident that Checker-Schuck's-Kragen will become an outstanding addition to our family of title sponsors in the series. The event at Firebird International Raceway has become one of our most anticipated over the years and Checker-Schuck's-Kragen's commitment will only help to continue the great tradition of NHRA Winston Drag Racing in the state of Arizona."

With 760 stores in 12 states, CSK Auto, Inc. is the largest retailer of automotive parts and accessories in the western United States.
