NHRA: Collins Racing Ready for Superbowl Race

14 January 1999

COLUMBIA, Va. - After an extensive test session in Bradenton, Fla. last week, Pro Stock driver Shawn Collins feels that he is ready for his second trip to the upcoming Pro Stock Superbowl Challenge Jan. 30, at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas.

"We had gone to Florida to test the new Liberty shifters but came out with a lot more data and knowledge than expected," Collins said. "Anytime you get the chance to test with the veterans of this sport it gives you an opportunity to share information and ask lots of questions."

Collins, the primary driver of the Collins Racing Pro Stock team, will be starting his second season with the National Hot Rod Association in 1999 and plans on putting a lot of energy into his runs this year. "Last year was my rookie year for more than just seat time, it was also my rookie year as a team owner," Collins said. "I put a lot of time and energy into getting the right people in place, gaining the right equipment and getting Richie through his rookie season. This year I'll be concentrating on my driving ability and winning."

Collins' two-day test session was originally scheduled for the track in Gainesville, Fla., but due to cold weather and track conditions, the test was moved to Bradenton. Collins made 12 passes over the two-day session consistently running times in the mid-6.90s with the new configured shifters. Some of the other drivers at the test included Jim Yates, Ricky Smith and Robert Patrick.

Richie "The Kid" Stevens, the second Pro Stock driver on the Collins Racing team, is also ready for the upcoming event in Houston. "I'm hoping to go down there and improve on last year's performance," Stevens said. "We had a couple of 200 mph runs and that's what I'm looking for this year. A win in Houston would be a great start going into Pomona."

This year's Superbowl will be the third one for Stevens. His first trip came in 1996 where he finished runner up to Roy Hill. His second trip came last year where he had fast runs but red lighted and was eliminated in the second round.

The one-day event begins at 8 a.m. with professional time trials at 10 a.m. and noon. Elimination racing begins at 1 p.m. Tickets are available for $18 and children under 12 will be admitted for $1.
