TOMMI MAKINEN IS THE NEW WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONThe engine of Carlos Sainz's Corolla blew up 1km from the end of the final stage. He made a further 700m, but has stopped due to an engine fire and has retired from the event. This means that Tommi Makinen is the World Champion.
This is not to over shadow the awesome performance of Richard Burns in the Mitsubishi Carisma who has won his home event by almost 4 minutes. Burns won every stage on the final day in difficult conditions.
